Sardis held the neokorate — the honor of maintaining an imperial cult temple — multiple times, and the Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ legend on this issue proudly advertises the city's third such grant. These titles were fiercely competed for among the great cities of Asia Minor, carrying real economic and political weight: they attracted festival traffic, pilgrims, and imperial favor. Sardis had to fight hard against rival Smyrna and Ephesus for each recognition.
Elagabalus's reign lasted just four years before the Praetorian Guard murdered him at eighteen.
