| 裏面の説明 | A lion in full stride, moving to the right, depicted with naturalistic energy in the Alexandrian provincial tradition. The animal's body is rendered in low relief with visible musculature, its tail raised behind. The regnal date legend appears in the lower field below the lion. The coin's irregular flan and worn surfaces are consistent with an extensively circulated Alexandrian tetradrachm-series bronze of the late 2nd century AD. |

Year 23 of Commodus corresponds to 182–183 AD, a period when his reign was already marked by the aftermath of a serious assassination attempt — the Commodian conspiracy of 182, in which his sister Lucilla was implicated. The resulting purges reshaped the imperial court and accelerated Commodus's increasingly erratic consolidation of personal power. Alexandrian bronzes of this year were struck under the prefect of Egypt within a provincial system that had operated its own distinct dating and coinage since Augustus formalized it.
