Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony founded by Antigonus in the late 4th century BC and later refounded by Lysimachus, but it was Augustus who granted it full colonial status — the COL AVG in the legend reflects that Augustan charter, still proudly cited on civic bronze two centuries later. The city's position on the Troad coast made it a natural stopping point on the Aegean crossing, and it retained enough civic pride and administrative weight to maintain an active mint well into the Severan period.
The years 180–183 place this issue in the opening of Commodus's sole reign, following the death of Marcus Aurelius in March 180.
