Cyzicus was among the most economically active mints in the Propontis region, and its civic bronze issues under Commodus reflect a city operating with considerable autonomy during a reign otherwise marked by administrative dysfunction in Rome. Commodus's co-regency began formally in 177 AD under Marcus Aurelius, giving provincial mints years of practice striking his portrait before his sole reign began in 180.

The conventus system meant Cyzicus served as a judicial and administrative hub for its surrounding district — civic coin production was as much a declaration of that status as it was a practical supply of small change.
