Ephesus held the title of neokoros — temple warden — of the imperial cult, and the Β ΝΕΟΚ legend on this issue asserts that status twice over, the city having received its second such honor under Hadrian. The designation was fiercely contested among Ionian cities and carried real administrative and economic weight, bringing festival traffic and Roman favor to whichever polis could claim it.
