Reverse description Artemis, depicted as huntress, striding or running to the right, grasping a stag by its antlers and drawing it toward her in a dynamic hunting pose. The goddess is shown in short chiton, consistent with her iconographic role as divine huntress, patron deity of Ephesus. The scene is rendered in typical provincial style, with the legend distributed around the field. A beaded border encircles the entire reverse design.

Additional information

Ephesus held the title of neokoros — temple warden — of the imperial cult, and the Β ΝΕΟΚ legend on this issue asserts that status twice over, the city having received its second such honor under Hadrian. The designation was fiercely contested among Ionian cities and carried real administrative and economic weight, bringing festival traffic and Roman favor to whichever polis could claim it.
