Calchedon — the city Megarian colonists founded around 685 BC on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, directly opposite Byzantium — was famously mocked by the Delphic oracle as a "city of the blind" for having chosen the inferior site. Under Claudius, the city retained the right to strike local bronze, a civic privilege that was never guaranteed under the early Principate and depended heavily on imperial favor or administrative inertia.
The reference I#1787 suggests a relatively isolated type; Calchedonian bronzes from this reign are sparsely represented in major collections.
