RPC I 2624 belongs to a small group of Ephesian bronzes issued under Claudius that explicitly invoke the city's status as the seat of the imperial cult for Asia. The Greek legend ΕΦΕΣΙΑ — "of Ephesus" — was not mere civic pride; it was a pointed assertion of the city's long-running rivalry with Smyrna and Pergamon over which polis held primacy as neokoros, the official temple-warden of Rome's divine emperors in the province.
The issue dates to around the time Claudius consolidated administrative arrangements across Asia Minor following his annexation of Lycia in 43 AD.
