| Aanvullende informatie |
Clazomenae, one of the twelve Ionian cities, had long punched above its weight culturally — birthplace of Anaxagoras, the philosopher who scandalized Athens by claiming the sun was a incandescent rock rather than a god. By Caracalla's reign the city was a minor provincial center within the Smyrna conventus, issuing civic bronzes largely to facilitate local exchange and demonstrate continued municipal identity under Roman administration. The conventus system meant Smyrna, not Clazomenae, held judicial authority over the region.
V.2 #684 places this among a small cluster of Clazomenian types for Caracalla's long co-reign and sole reign period.
