Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony established by Antigonus and refounded by Lysimachus before Augustus formalized its colonial status — a layered history that gave the city an unusually strong civic identity and the right to produce its own bronze coinage. Under Caracalla, the colony issued prolifically, likely tied to his known favoritism toward cities that held colonial rank, a status he exploited politically during his eastern campaigns.

The Conventus of Adramyteum grouped administratively distant cities, and Alexandria Troas was its most numismatically active member by a considerable margin.
