The dating formula ΕΤ ϹΜΗ places this issue in year 248 of the Pontic Era, corresponding to 216–217 AD — the final year of Caracalla's reign before his murder on the road to Carrhae in April 217. Amisus had held its status as a free city (ΕΛΕΥΘ) since Julius Caesar confirmed its liberties, a privilege it jealously maintained on its coinage for over two centuries. That autonomy allowed the city to control its own bronze issues without direct Roman mint supervision.
