Bostra served as the capital of Roman Arabia from the province's establishment in 106 AD and was one of the few eastern cities to mint bronze civic coinage under Antoninus Pius. The city's unusual epithet — "New Traiana" — commemorates Trajan's annexation of the Nabataean kingdom, a distinction the Bostrans maintained on their coinage for decades after his death as a marker of civic prestige tied directly to the founder of their province.
