| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare head of the youthful river god Gelas facing right, his hair bound with a wreath of reeds, rendered in a naturalistic Hellenistic style. The facial features are modeled with broad, slightly worn relief typical of late Sicilian bronze coinage. The reed wreath, emblematic of the river deity, is clearly articulated around the crown of the head. The field is plain, with the effigy occupying the majority of the flan. |

Gela's bronze coinage presents a dating puzzle — the city was destroyed by Phintias of Akragas in 282 BC and its population forcibly relocated to the newly founded Phintias (modern Licata), effectively ending the mint's operation. Any bronze issue from Gela therefore predates that destruction, though attribution within the fourth and early third centuries remains contested among specialists working the HGC series.
