The Koinon of Thessaly — a federal league revived under Roman oversight — retained the right to strike provincial bronze through much of the third century, issuing coins in the joint names of co-emperors as a deliberate expression of loyalty to whoever held power in Rome. The pairing of Valerian and Gallienus places this piece between 253 and 260, before Valerian's capture by Shapur I at Edessa rendered joint titulature politically awkward.
The Γ in the obverse legend denotes a die or issue control mark, a practice the Thessalian koinon used to organize what were likely small, episodic production runs.
