His right hand rests upon his characteristic attribute, the serpent-entwined staff (the kerykeion of Asclepius). The figure is rendered in the conventional Hellenistic divine type standard for provincial bronze coinage of Bithynia. The encircling Greek legend proclaims Nicomedia's prestigious status as a twice-neocorate city, indicating it had twice been granted the honor of establishing an imperial cult temple. |
