Philomelium, a Phrygian city on the road between Apameia and Iconium, issued bronze coinage under its own civic authority throughout the Severan period — a privilege extended to hundreds of Asian cities that Rome found administratively convenient to let manage their own small-denomination currency. The civic bronze of this region rarely traveled far; it was hyperlocal money, used at market and temple, and most examples that survive did so in the ground rather than in circulation.
