Obverse description Laureate head of Emperor Septimius Severus facing right, rendered in the typical provincial style of the Ephesian mint. The imperial effigy displays the characteristic short-bearded portrait of Severus with a laurel wreath. The Greek legend encircles the bust in the field, reading from left to right. The flan is irregular and the surfaces show heavy patination consistent with prolonged circulation.

Reverse description Hermes, the divine messenger and patron of commerce, depicted standing to the left in the field. The deity holds a purse in his extended right hand and a caduceus in his left, while his left arm rests upon a column at his side. The composition reflects the city of Ephesus's close association with trade and commerce. The encircling Greek legend around the reverse field proudly proclaims Ephesus's status as a twice-neocorate city, an honorific title of great civic prestige.
