Samos struck bronze coinage under Septimius Severus as part of the broader civic coinage activity permitted across the conventus of Miletus, where local communities maintained the right to issue bronze for regional circulation. The island had a long history of autonomous coinage interrupted and resumed across successive imperial reigns, and the legend ϹΑΜΙΩΝ — the genitive plural identifying the issuing community — was a standard assertion of civic identity common to Greek provincial issues of this period.
The V.2 reference places this within the Waddell-era cataloguing of Samian bronzes, a series with numerous unpublished die combinations.
