Lampsacus, positioned on the eastern shore of the Hellespont, had been a significant Greek colonial city since antiquity and retained enough civic prestige under Roman administration to strike its own bronze for local use. The city's coinage under Septimius Severus falls within the turbulent opening of his reign — the Year of the Five Emperors — when demonstrating loyalty to the winning claimant through civic coin issues carried real political weight.
The conventus of Adramyteum was one of the smaller administrative districts of Asia, and bronze from its constituent cities rarely achieved wide circulation beyond the immediate region.
