| Obverse description | Confronted busts of the imperial couple: the draped bust of Empress Poppaea facing right, juxtaposed with the laureate head of Emperor Nero facing left, rendered in the provincial Greek style characteristic of Ephesian civic coinage of the mid-first century AD. The Greek legend ΝΕΡΩΝ ΠΟΠΠΑΙΑ is disposed around the periphery of the field, with the mint abbreviation ΕΦ (for Ephesos) also present. The composition, placing the two busts face-to-face, is a common device employed in provincial issues celebrating the imperial pair. |
