The goddess is flanked on either side by a recumbent lion, a standard iconographic attribute of the Phrygian cult. The reverse legend, disposed around the field, names the local magistrate responsible for the issue and identifies the civic mint. The type reflects the central importance of the Cybele cult at Cotiaeum in Phrygia. |

Cotiaeum, a mid-tier Phrygian city in the Synnada conventus, minted under local magistrates whose names the coins preserve in full — here Hermaphilos, serving a second term (ΑΡΧ Β indicating his second archonship). The practice of naming the presiding magistrate on civic bronzes was both an honor and an accountability mechanism in Asia Minor's provincial administration. Maximinus Thrax, the emperor whose reign frames this issue, never set foot in the eastern provinces; his rule was contested almost from the start and ended with his murder outside Aquileia in 238.
