Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Augusta Troas — founded by Antigonus in the fourth century BC and later refounded by Lysimachus before Augustus formalized its colonial status. That standing entitled it to mint coinage bearing the COL AVG TR legend, a privilege that distinguished it sharply from the Greek civic mints of the surrounding conventus. The years 175–177 place this issue in the turbulent aftermath of the Avidius Cassius revolt, when Marcus Aurelius traveled through Asia Minor and the eastern provinces to reassert imperial authority and reward loyal cities.

Alexandria Troas was among the communities that demonstrated conspicuous loyalty during that crisis.
