She extends her right hand downward to hold a ship's rudder resting on the ground, symbolising the city's maritime prosperity, while her left arm cradles a cornucopia overflowing with fruits, emblematic of abundance. The field is plain, and the encircling legend ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ Β ΝΕΟ in the exergual and peripheral area designates Ephesus as the second neokorate city. The execution is typical of the provincial workshop of Ephesus under the reign of Marcus Aurelius. |
