Magnesia ad Maeandrum's civic bronze issues under Marcus Aurelius fall within the early co-regency period with Lucius Verus, when provincial mints across the Milesian conventus were navigating the administrative novelty of dual emperorship. The city had long traded on its mythological founding credentials and its association with the cult of Artemis Leucophryene, and civic bronze production under the Antonines was as much a statement of local institutional continuity as anything else.
The Milesian conventus grouping placed Magnesia within a jurisdiction that handled some of the most commercially active territory in Asia Minor, the Maeander valley being a principal artery for inland trade.
