The composition reflects the standard iconography of Dionysus as the principal deity of Aphrodisias's civic coinage under Gordian III. The encircling Greek legend ΑΦΡΟΔΕΙϹΙΕΩΝ identifies the issuing city. The reverse type alludes to the strong local cult of Dionysus attested at Aphrodisias throughout the Imperial period. |
