| Reverse description | The mythological Amazon Smyrna, eponymous founder of the city, depicted standing to the left in a dynamic pose. She holds a small temple model in one hand, and carries a double axe (labrys) and a pelta (crescent-shaped Amazon shield), with a chlamys draped about her; a ship's prow (aphlaston or rostrum) is shown at her feet, alluding to Smyrna's maritime prominence. The extensive Greek legend surrounding the type records the city's triple neocorate status and the name of the presiding strategos Marcus Aurelius Sextus. |
