Athens struck provincial bronze under Gallienus during a period when the city faced an existential threat: the Herulian sack of 267 AD, which devastated Attica and effectively ended the city's autonomous civic coinage. Whether this piece predates the raid or was struck in its immediate aftermath — before the workshops fell silent — is difficult to determine with certainty, but the cessation of Athenian civic issues closely follows 267.
