Two nude children are seated on either side, facing each other and engaged in the game of astragaloi (knucklebones), a scene closely associated with the sacred precinct of the Heraion at Samos. The ethnic legend ϹΑΜΙΩΝ appears in the field. The composition reflects the strong local religious identity expressed on Samian provincial bronzes of the Severan period. |
