Year four of Claudius's reign in Egypt — rendered as LΔ in the regnal dating system Alexandria applied to all imperial coinage — places this piece in 43/44 AD, just three years after Claudius's accession following Caligula's assassination. The Alexandrian mint operated under tight prefectural control and issued bronze in a closed currency system: Roman denarii did not circulate freely in Egypt, and locally struck bronze handled the lower end of daily transactions in the province.
The regnal year dating convention is what makes Alexandrian bronzes chronologically precise in a way most provincial issues are not.
