Epidaurus struck bronze coinage sparingly under the Antonines, and civic issues from this mint are thinly represented in major collections. The city's identity was inseparable from the sanctuary of Asklepios, one of the most visited healing shrines in the ancient Mediterranean, drawing pilgrims from across the empire throughout the second century. Whether this coin circulated primarily within that sanctuary economy — votive transactions, lodging, sacrifice fees — or saw broader regional use is difficult to say, but the cult's financial infrastructure was substantial enough to support independent civic minting.
