Apamea in Bithynia was a Roman colony — Colonia Iulia Concordia Apamea — whose civic bronze issues under Antoninus Pius were produced by local authority under the sanction of the decuriones, reflected in the D D (decreto decurionum) formula. The colonists used Latin legends on civic bronzes long after Greek had become standard across most of the eastern provincial coinage, a deliberate assertion of colonial Roman identity in a predominantly Hellenized region.
