| Beschrijving keerzijde | A river-god reclines to the left in a relaxed, classical pose, his body partially draped and supported by a large water-urn from which a stream flows. In his extended hand he holds a cult statue of Artemis of Ephesus, the celebrated Ephesian idol depicted in her characteristic frontal, multi-breasted form with supports along the sides. The composition alludes to the sacred association between the city's principal deity and its riverine landscape, a motif well attested in Ephesian civic coinage of the Antonine period. The reverse legend identifying the city and its magistrate encircles the type. |
