He holds the Nemean lion skin draped over his left arm and grasps his club, set upright, in his right hand. To the left in the field stands a cantharus, the two-handled drinking vessel associated with Dionysiac cult and civic pride at Smyrna. The Greek reverse legend encircles the design, asserting the city's triple neocorate status. |
