Alexandria Troas held the status of a Roman colony — Colonia Alexandria Augusta Troadensis — granted under Augustus, which explains the COL AV designation carried on its coinage into the third century. The joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus represented one of the last sustained periods of stable imperial co-rule before Gallienus governed alone following his father's capture by Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa in 260. That capture effectively ended the joint issue.
Bronze colonial coinage from the Conventus of Adramyteum rarely commanded imperial attention; these were locally administered emissions serving regional exchange.
