Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Alexandria Augusta Troas — refounded under Augustus on the site of an older Hellenistic city, and it retained the rare privilege of striking bronze coinage into the third century long after most Asian cities had lost that right. The joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus, 253–260, ended abruptly when Valerian was captured by the Sasanian king Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa — the only Roman emperor ever taken prisoner by a foreign enemy. Colonial bronze issues from Alexandria Troas cease precisely at that horizon.
