Alexandria Troas, a Roman colony in the Troad founded under Augustus, maintained its colonial coinage privilege well into the third century — a mark of the city's sustained administrative status at a time when many Asian mints had long gone silent. Trebonianus Gallus came to power after the death of Decius at the Battle of Abritus in 251, the first Roman emperor killed in battle by a foreign enemy. His reign lasted barely two years before he was murdered by his own troops.
