Alexandria Troas held the status of a Roman colony — Colonia Augusta Troadensis — a distinction granted under Augustus and jealously maintained through imperial coinage long after most provincial mints had ceased operation. The city's bronze issues continued well into the third century crisis, making it one of the last active provincial mints in the region. Trebonianus Gallus came to power following the catastrophic Battle of Abritus in 251, where his predecessor Decius was killed fighting the Goths — the first Roman emperor to die in battle against a foreign enemy.
