Additional information

Nicomedia held the title of "twice neokoros" — twice temple warden for the imperial cult — a distinction fiercely competed for among Bithynian cities and formally granted by the Roman Senate. The designation ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚ advertised that status on the coinage itself, a pointed civic boast aimed as much at rival Nicaea as at any Roman audience.
