Reverse description A seafaring hero, identified with the mythological tradition of Nicomedia's founding, advances to the right atop a ship's prow. The figure turns his head back to look toward his companions, with one arm raised in a beckoning gesture and the other holding a spear. Rocky formations appear behind the figure, evoking a coastal or maritime setting. The encircling Greek legend proclaims the twice-neocorate status of Nicomedia. The composition is typical of the civic pride expressed through mythological reverse types on Bithynian provincial bronzes.
