(Translation: Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Alexander)
Reverse description Marsyas seated nude to the left upon a rock or base, his body rendered in a relaxed posture characteristic of Hellenistic iconographic tradition. He holds a cornucopia in one arm and raises a double flute (aulos) in the other hand, referencing his mythological association with music. The figure is well-centred within the flan, with the encircling Greek legend distributed in the field around him. The reverse type alludes to the civic pride of Apamea, where the myth of Marsyas held local religious and cultural significance.
