| Obverse description | Draped bust of Julia Domna facing right, her hair elaborately waved and coiled at the nape in the characteristic Severan style. The empress is depicted with drapery over the shoulder, rendered in low relief. A Greek legend encircles the bust in the field. The flan is heavily patinated and the details are worn, consistent with extended circulation. |

Iulia Gordus was a small Lydian city whose civic coinage depended entirely on local magistrates funding issues as acts of public generosity — euergetism in practice, not imperial mandate. Under Septimius Severus, provincial bronzes from the Sardis conventus proliferated sharply, partly because the new dynasty needed visible loyalty signals from Asia Minor cities that had backed Pescennius Niger during the civil war of 193.
Whether Iulia Gordus was among the cities that had supported the losing side is unresolved, but coins struck in Severus's name from this region functioned as public acts of realignment.
