This type, evoking the founding myth of Rome, was a deliberate reference to the city's origins employed on provincial coinage to honour the emperor. The reverse legend ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ Β ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ is distributed around the type, proclaiming Ephesus as a twice-granted neocorate city. The design is rendered in the somewhat bold, high-relief style typical of Ionian provincial bronzes. |
