Reverse description The she-wolf (Lupa Romana) stands in profile to the right with head turned back to the left, suckling the twin infants Romulus and Remus who are depicted beneath her. This type, evoking the founding myth of Rome, was a deliberate reference to the city's origins employed on provincial coinage to honour the emperor. The reverse legend ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ Β ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ is distributed around the type, proclaiming Ephesus as a twice-granted neocorate city. The design is rendered in the somewhat bold, high-relief style typical of Ionian provincial bronzes.
