He extends his right hand to present a patera, while his left hand holds a double axe (labrys), an attribute with strong regional cultic significance in Phrygia and Lydia. The legend ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ surrounds the figure in the field, proclaiming the neocorate status and the concord between the two cities. The type as a whole commemorates the formal alliance between Hierapolis and Sardis, expressed through the shared homonoia coinage convention of the Roman provincial series. |
