Corinth's colonial coinage under Hadrian reflects the city's unusual status as a Roman colonia planted on the ruins of the Greek polis destroyed by Mummius in 146 BC. By Hadrian's reign, that colonial identity was still being actively maintained in the city's bronze issues, even as Hadrian himself toured Greece and famously favored Greek culture — a tension that Corinth, more Roman than its neighbors, navigated by doubling down on its Latin colonial titulature rather than adopting the Greek civic idiom common elsewhere in Achaea.
