Additional information

Nysa-Scythopolis sat astride the Maeander valley in Lydia, and its civic bronze issues under Gordian III belong to a well-documented burst of local minting activity that accompanied his eastern campaigns against Shapur I. The city's coins from this period are catalogued in Bürrer's corpus under the Ephesus conventus grouping, reflecting the administrative reorganization of Asia Minor under the Severan dynasty that persisted into Gordian's reign.

The VII.1#474 reference places this piece within a tightly classified die study. Nysan bronzes of this size show considerable variation in flan preparation across the series.
