Elaea was a small coastal polis in Aeolis whose main claim to importance was serving as the harbor town for Pergamum — a role that gave it just enough civic standing to strike bronze under the imperial system without ever producing coinage of significant volume. Issues under Gordian III from this mint are scarce, and VII.1#97 is among the rarer numbered types in the Pergamene conventus sequence.
