Athens struck remarkably few bronze coins during the sole reign of Gallienus, and the city's civic coinage had been in steep decline for decades before the catastrophic Herulian sack of 267 AD, which devastated the lower city and almost certainly disrupted whatever remained of municipal mint activity. Whether this piece predates that raid or was struck in its immediate aftermath is impossible to determine with certainty from physical evidence alone.
