Athens struck remarkably little coinage during the sole reign of Gallienus, and what exists reflects a city under genuine external pressure. The Herulian sack of 267 AD devastated Athens — the invaders breached the Valerian Wall and burned much of the lower city, an event so traumatic that Athenian civic life, including local coin production, effectively ceased in its aftermath. This piece almost certainly predates that catastrophe.
