Calchedon occupied the eastern shore of the Bosphorus directly opposite Byzantium, a position that made it strategically significant but perpetually overshadowed. When Elagabalus came to power in 218 following the defeat and death of Macrinus at the Battle of Antioch, the cities of Bithynia quickly issued coins in his name — civic bronze production was as much a gesture of political alignment as a practical monetary act.
